The WATERISE project tackles the urgent challenge of water scarcity in Mediterranean islands. As these regions face rising temperatures, frequent droughts, and seasonal surges in tourism, WATERISE develops and tests practical, low-impact solutions to improve water security. The project focuses on seven key islands, including Cyprus, implementing nature-based solutions like natural wastewater treatment, rainwater harvesting, and atmospheric water generation directly at tourist hubs such as hotels, parks, and museums. By blending traditional local knowledge, such as heritage conservation techniques, with modern green technology, the project promotes climate change adaptation and fosters a circular blue economy. Through a collaborative network of pilot sites, bootcamps, and a shared e-learning hub, WATERISE empowers local authorities and tourism stakeholders to adopt “water-wise” measures that ensure a resilient and sustainable future for Mediterranean communities.
• Promote climate change adaptation and disaster risk prevention, resilience, taking into account eco-system based approaches.
• Test practical, low-impact solutions like natural wastewater treatment, rainwater harvesting, and atmospheric water generation, in touristic places.
• Integrate traditional Mediterranean water management systems (like the dammusi and Pantesco gardens) with modern green technologies.
• Establish a collaborative network to enhance the eco-innovation capacity of territorial stakeholders.
• Grow into a permanent hub of knowledge and inspiration, fostering long-term cooperation and providing a blueprint for other Mediterranean islands to follow
